Quick guide - setup vTiger 5.1 on a Ubuntu Server

1. start with basic ubuntu 9.10 install - select LAMP server as server type towards end of install.

(I used x32 version on a VMware box)

1.1 update - apt-get update

1.2 upgrade - apt-get upgrade

1.3 set root password - sudo passwd root

(type current user password, then new root password x2)

1.4 type exit to logout and log back in as root (remain as root at all times to admin for ease of use)

2. install ssh - apt-get install ssh (You can then use putty to connect to the box!)

3. install extras for php -

apt-get install libapache2-mod-auth-mysql
apt-get install php5-mysql (may not be needed)
apt-get install php5-gd

apt-get install php5-imap

4. Use winSCP & putty to control the box
Download vtiger510.tar.gz source file from www.vtiger.com
Copy the vtigercrm file to the default root directory of the apache server. (/var/www)

Set file permissions:

Cd /var/www/vtigercrm
Chmod 777 filename
(I USED the winSCP browser for this and applied to all child objects)

Ther is one that they don’t tell you about. It is the /var/www/vtigercrm/cache/ images file. Change the permission on this one too. If you do not, you won’t be able to see the dashboard images

Use winSCP to navigate to /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini - Double click to open in a basic text editor.

change settings to recommended set (not the red default value) - save and REBOOT the server!

Recommended PHP Settings:
Directive Recommended PHP.ini value
display_errors On Off
max_execution_time 600 30
error_reporting E_WARNING & ~E_NOTICE NOT RECOMMENDED
allow_call_time_pass_reference On Off
log_errors Off On
memory_limit 32M

REBOOT!!!! to refresh the new php changes.

5. navigate your browser to: (change the ip to match the new box...)

http://192.168.10.140/vtigercrm

Following the install you should get all green with no problems prior to install. (if not check above)

when all items are green. continue the installation specify the root username and password for mysql (provided during install of ubuntu)

fill in the rest of the boxes (mostly self explanitry - the admin and stdusers are the default users for the crm)

EXTRA for remote access to the mySql data- Check the "/etc/mysql/my.cnf" file COMMENT OUT the bind address:
#bind-address = 127.0.0.1
This allows access to the sql database directly from excternal source, useful if you are going to remote admin the data.
(You may have to use the mysql GRANT command to enable full access.)

login...

mysql -u root -p

Then

GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON db_base.* TO db_user @'%' IDENTIFIED BY 'db_passwd';

eg

GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO root@'servername.local' IDENTIFIED BY '*********';
